Our approach to Conservation is to understand the building within its immediate setting and the broader context of the surrounding location, to review the historical record of events and persons that have impacted and used the setting, and to work within the vehicle of assessment and review to establish the priorities for a response to the setting and the intended goals for the overall project. The intended scope of work will be impacted by both the known and found conditions of the site and building in finalizing the intended scope and approach to implement the work. Heritage buildings are increasingly conserved beyond the desire to retain a significant heritage resource and to incorporate appropriate uses to support their retention. Many such projects are undertaken to both respect the heritage fabric while responding to current program requirements, spatial needs and energy standards. Balancing these objectives against the heritage resource is a crucial part of conservation. The four categories of Conservation work seek either to preserve, rehabilitate, restore or find adaptive re-use for an increasing number of heritage sites that we are undertaking in our practice.
