Limehouse

Client: Credit Valley Conservation

Project Completion: November 2009

In 2009, the second phase of restoration on a mid nineteenth century draw kiln in Halton Hills was completed. George Robb Architect, initially engaged in 2006, undertook stabilization of the existing stone structure—one of the few surviving remnants of the lime industry in the Village of Limehouse. Early work involved removing loose stone and securing the kiln’s upper portion with stainless steel aircraft cable.
The subsequent phase focused on clearing encroaching forest growth, uncovering the long buried firing floor, and stabilizing the remaining stonework. Steel bands were installed to reinforce the structure, while a reconstructed timber frame—faithfully replicating the original—was introduced to restore the kiln’s historic character. Future plans envision rebuilding the kiln to its original height. In the interim, the timber frame conveys the scale and presence of the kiln as it once stood.
