Valhalla Inn Hotel - Thunder Bay

This hotel has overnight accommodation for 600 and 1200 seats for dining and meetings. It is located on a site beside the airport and was subject to noise and height restrictions. Its design is a variation on the central garden courtyard and ring corridor theme originally developed for the Valhalla Inn in Etobicoke. The guest suites are a continuation of those designed for the Toronto tower. Ground floor suites step down from sleeping to sitting areas. The public areas expand on the theme of an open continuous landscape punctuated by large brick pillars. Overhead an exposed timber framed roof carries the triple roof theme and clerestory windows to drop into the interior. Much of the furniture and furnishings were designed specifically for the project. Special lamps were created for the lounge and restaurant. Copyright has been obtained for new chair designed for the restaurant. It opened in 1982.
