Silver Spire United Church

Client: Silver Spire United Church

Project Completion: 2013

Erected in 1863, Silver Spire United Church endured two major fires (1876 & 1962) that severely damaged its roof. Following the second fire, the roof was reconstructed in steel. Subsequent water infiltration and earlier roof replacements caused extensive masonry deterioration.
Public safety required stabilization of dislodged brickwork. The upper 4’–6” of the outer brick layer on both north and south elevations was rebuilt, and new gutters, downpipes, and flashings were installed. Unlike the original built-in roof gutters, the new system was positioned outboard.
Additional repairs addressed cracked joints and inappropriate re-pointing with dense mortar, which had accelerated brick erosion. Approximately 25% of the remaining wall area required re-pointing with historically appropriate materials.
The restoration was carried out in 2012.
