Morningstar Mill

Client: City of St. Catharines

In 2007, George Robb Architect (GRA) conducted a condition and safety assessment of all buildings at Morningstar Mill. A subsequent 2008 RFP titled Heritage Site Feasibility Assessment, End Use Study for Morningstar Mill expanded this work. The property, designated under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act (By-law 97-233), specifically recognizes the Grist Mill (1872) and Miller’s House (late 19th century). The Grist Mill operated until 1933, later serving Ontario Hydro, before becoming a museum in 1962. The Miller’s House remained occupied by the Morningstar family until 1993.
In 2021, Hatch and GRA were awarded engineering and architectural services to stabilize the masonry dam, restore the Grist Mill’s exterior, improve accessibility, and prepare a Heritage Impact Assessment. Work beginning in 2024 was expanded to include the Sawmill, Miller’s House, and former stable. Completion is anticipated in early 2026.
