Montgomery's Inn Office Renovations

Client: City of Toronto

Project Completion: 2019

In 2016, George Robb Architect was retained to redesign the 1988 office wing of the museum, a long‑standing community hub since the 1970s. The utilitarian addition was re‑envisioned to create a more welcoming arrival, open interior views, and stronger connections to the historic Inn and surrounding ravine.
Alterations included cantilevering an existing hollow‑core slab to form a new lobby balcony, reconfiguring the lower level beneath prefabricated trusses, and replacing the HVAC system with a high‑efficiency gas furnace and ductless split units for improved climate control. The lighting system was modernized with low‑level LED fixtures throughout offices and public spaces.
Together, these upgrades enhanced transparency, reinforced the building’s heritage character, and transformed the museum into a more sustainable facility.
