Covenant Revitalization
In late 2002, Covenant Reformed Church of Toronto commissioned the design of an addition to its 1958 brick sanctuary and narthex building, which included a full basement with classrooms, washrooms, and an assembly hall. The expansion addressed the need for additional classrooms and meeting rooms, a larger assembly hall, upgraded washrooms, office space for staff, and a barrier free elevator.
Situated within the Humber River flood plain and subject to Toronto Regional Conservation Authority restrictions, the site was limited to a one time addition not to exceed 50% of the original building footprint. The new wing, located on the eastern side of the building, introduced a central corridor and circulation spine adjacent to the sanctuary and basement program areas. Clerestory windows provide abundant natural light while preserving natural light to the east sanctuary windows. The expansion increased classrooms from four to six, meeting rooms from one to three, and the Fellowship Hall fifty percent.
