Cenotaph

Client: City of St. Catharines

In 2011, George Robb Architect was commissioned by the City of St. Catharines to assess deterioration of the cenotaph, originally erected in 1927 by the McIntosh Granite Company of Toronto. Constructed of Stanstead Gray granite on a concrete foundation, the monument’s core was found intact, though vertical mortar joints had failed due to inappropriate re‑pointing in the 1970s.
Restoration, completed in October 2012, included replacing iron fittings with stainless steel, installing new flashings, and re‑pointing all joints with lime‑based mortar. Landscaping improvements were finalized in November 2013.
