WHISPERING PINES

This retirement residence has been designed for those seniors who wish to maintain an active lifestyle in the comfort of a shared community. Located on the north side of the city centre in an established residential neighbourhood, this setting provides a familiar context that is both apart from the busyness of the overall community, but within reach of all the amenities of the city.

The building is comprised of one and two storey timber framed blocks arranged around a central garden courtyard. The two storey block, placed on the west side of the site extends out from this central courtyard south to front onto the street. This two storey block reflects the scale of the surrounding neighbourhood. A two storey central lobby, dining hall and administration area encloses the south side of the courtyard and provides the setback entrance for the building. The main entrance is protected by a spacious timber canopy supported on timber and stone faced columns. The stone, brick and wood materials continue throughout to provide a rich palette of familiar materials.

More than half the total 121 residential suites are located in the two storey portion of the building. The remaining suites accommodated in the single storey bungalows are arranged around the central courtyard. The resulting corridor system forms a loop within the building with access to the courtyard, two sitting rooms, a common room with kitchenette, windows facing the courtyard and the connection back to the main lobby, with its fireplace, sunporch and private dining facilities. This becomes the interior street and a safe walking route in the winter season.

The basement has been accommodated with hair salon, a large common room for special programme events, public washrooms, resident storage facilities and a suite lounge and change room facility. Construction is anticipated to be substantially complete in March 2005, with occupancy in early April.
