CITY OF WINDSOR

George Robb Architect performed a condition assessment for the City of Windsor to review the principles and strategies for the preservation and maintenance of the City’s heritage buildings. Buildings ranged from a simple, abandoned, single-family residence to a masterfully conceived and crafted Manor House and related buildings. The reports comment on the condition of all elements of the various buildings’ fabric and mechanical and electrical components. The buildings assessed included Mackenzie Hall, Richardson Library, Sandwich Fire Hall, Langlois House and Willistead Manor’s Manor House, Coach House and Gate House. All have historic significance, and viable contemporary uses. Estimates were provided for repair and maintenance of each property. MacKenzie Hall, Richardson Library and the buildings of Willistead Manor all have viable contemporary uses. Since the study, Langlois House has been sold at auction on condition that its new owner restores it in accordance with contemporary conservation principles. The future of the Sandwich Firehall remains unresolved.

This project has given George Robb Architect the opportunity to evaluate several interesting and important buildings, as well as the opportunity to consider several larger issues that face all communities concerned with the preservation of the past.
