The Valhalla Inn is located in
a commercial suburb of Toronto beside what has become a major
expressway. A central garden is surrounded by low wings. Stone and brick
piers support exposed timber roofs. It was intended to be powerful,
romantic, timeless, and evocative of Canadian themes. The garden recalls
the terrain of the Canadian Shield and uses native plants. The three
distinctive roofs placed over the bar and restaurant soon became a
distinctive and ongoing theme of the enterprise. Copper, bronze, teak,
and slate confirm the intention to establish a sense of permanence.
Bedroom and public area furniture was specifically designed for the
project in conjunction with the cabinet maker Max Lienhard
The success of the hotel has
generated an almost continuous programme of additions and subtle
modifications. The original 80 guests suites and 240 seats have been
expanded to 280 suites and 1620 seats. Additionally, the new mermaid
lounge was designed in 1976; and in 1977, a fourteen storey suite tower
was completed.George Robb Architect has completed three other hotels for the Valhalla
Inn Corporation in Kitchener, Thunder Bay and Markham.
