The Upper Canada Child Care Centre is a multiple day care provider in the north east
portion of Metropolitan Toronto with over twenty six active centers. In the spring of 2000,
George Robb Architect undertook a study for the expansion of this existing 3,900 s.f. office. The
adjacent office space was available and the resulting combined suite would total 7,426 s.f.
The culture of the existing office was focused on the central meeting room for daily meetings and
planning, as well as acting as the social hub for lunch hour and break time. The family style of
working was evident and significant to maintain in the expansion of this office. To foster the
intimacy of the existing offices, a cross corridor was introduced through the middle of the office suite.
This cross corridor links the two sides of the offices at the location of the meeting room and the new kitchen.
Daily movement in the space is past the kitchen which has maintained its focus as the social hub of the office layout.
This expansion would permit the provision of thirteen private offices in lieu of the existing five. The meeting
room has been increased by 80% to allow for the required monthly training sessions provided to the directors of the centers.
The lunchroom has been separated from the meeting room with room for up to sixteen people and a kitchen to support the requirements of
the meeting room for catering.
