TECUMSEH MUNICIPAL BUILDING

After outgrowing its facility in 1989, the Corporation of the Town of Tecumseh retained George Robb, Architect to provide a building evaluation and space needs study. While council had been considering the construction of separate new buildings to accommodate the police and fire departments, we recommended reorganizing the building to achieve the model of a central forum surrounded by the various departments of municipal services. The forum would be used on a daily basis to facilitate municipal service activities as well as special events, committee and council meetings, etc.

The new forum was built in the location of the existing council chambers, and additions were proposed to accommodate the expanded police and fire departments. Community access to services remained centralized and the council chamber – previously used four or five days a month – became the hub of community activities and administration.

The 40-foot square forum is now the focal point of the building. The police, fire and municipal departments are presented as storefronts around the space. Council sits on a raised dias embellished with rich paneling. A pyramidal skylight glows as a beacon to the community. A deeply coffered ceiling reflects the slate grid floor. This pattern extends to the outside wall and aligns with the main window openings. The forum is in full view of the street beyond.
