MASTER PLAN STUDY
HIS MANSION MINISTRIES
RENFREW, ONTARIO
In February of 1995, His Mansion Ministries of Ontario
commissioned George Robb Architect to undertake a Master Plan Study for
a farm site east of Renfrew, Ontario. The site is located north
of County Road No. 20, approximately 5 kilometers east of Renfrew and
three kilometers east of the Ottawa River.
His Mansion Ministry of Ontario is a Christian based
non-profit rehabilitation programme established in Hillsboro, New
Hampshire. “Our programs are particularly designed to offer spiritual
healing to young adults who suffer from a variety of spiritual,
emotional, and/or behavioural problems” (HMM. Website). The setting for
this counselling programme is a working farm, in which the participants
take the responsibility to live from the proceeds of their own work.
This 198 acre site is comprised of
approximately 42 acres of arable land, 152 acres of forested area, two
one acre residential lots facing County Road No. 20 and a proposed pond
basin on the remaining 2 acres of the site.
The objectives of the Master Plan
Study were to provide the His Mansion Ministry of Ontario Committee:
- an overall strategy for the Site Development,
- develop an appropriate architectural vocabulary and identity,
- create a setting that encouraged community,
- establish phases for the execution of the overall Site Development,
- provide a cost analysis related to the phase of the Site Development and
- provide a detailed cost summary for the first phase of the work.
The design components included two
options for site development and concept drawings for programme
directors, single dormitories, combined dormitories, office and
counseling building and the dining room/meeting place/guest
accommodations. The buildings are arranged as a village setting
within the context of a central shared commons. The farm
buildings were located away from this hub in close proximity to the
adjacent arable lands.
