In the late fall of 2002, Covenant Reformed Church of Toronto
commissioned the design of an addition to their existing
building. Completed in 1958, this handsome brick structure was
comprised of a ground floor sanctuary and narthex with a full basement
with classrooms, washrooms and assembly hall. The church
identified the need for additional classrooms/meeting rooms, a larger
assembly hall, upgraded washrooms and the provision of a general
office, minister’s office and barrier free elevator.
Located within the flood plain of the Humber River under the
jurisdiction of the Toronto Regional Conservation Authority, the
building is restricted to a one time addition not to exceed 50% of the
original building footprint.
The addition as proposed is located along the eastern side of
the existing building. Within the new portion of the building, the
design has provided a central corridor and circulation spine
immediately adjacent to the sanctuary and existing basement programme
areas.Clerestory windows flood the central corridor with natural
light and assure the continued illumination of the east sanctuary
windows.Classrooms have been increased from four to six, meeting
rooms have been increased from one to three and the main Fellowship
Hall has been increased in area by over fifty percent.
