THE COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL

The Country Day School is an independent school near King City, north of Toronto. A junior programme was established in 1972 and in 1985 it was decided to extend the curriculum up to university admission. A thirty-five acre site was acquired and Phase 1 of the Building was completed in 1986, with Phase 2 opening in 1988.

The building stretches along the axis of a gently sloping ridge set well back from the highway. It presents a single articulated composition dominated by the central mass of the meeting place, which is offset by the positive volumes of the studio and science rooms at either end. Corridors and clerestory classrooms play a connecting role. Adjacent to the main entrance gable is the office of the headmaster, exercising a discreet surveillance of exterior events.

The building is designed to help students rediscover many of the things that the educators have programmed out of their facilities in the last twenty years; things like daylight, sunshine, space and a view of the landscape. Wood, glass and masonry are the principal materials. Construction is timber frame on a concrete foundation. The roof structure is exposed on the interior and painted white for light reflection and fire protection.

Phase 1, completed in 1985, has provided a core of facilities with a high proportion of space committed to support elements; Phase 2, completed in 1988, provides a generous athletic facility to sustain an extensive indoor and outdoor sports programme. These current and future classrooms are arranged in a master plan comprising a ring corridor system around a central courtyard.
