Morningstar Mill Lookout
Client: City of St. Catharines
Budget: $150 000
Project Completion: 2012
This intervention is located in a scenic area of St. Catharines overlooking a waterfall.
The scheme for the lookout point needed to take into consideration both safety and continuity with the existing historical context.
The guard system keeps the nature of the traditional split post fence, while being made of current dimensioned lumber and durable fittings.
The new split fence post can also be fitted with glass where necessary, providing both transparency and safety.

Our approach to Conservation is to simultaniously embrace the original period's method of building together with today's construction practices. This hybrid of learning from the past while incorporating contemporary developments in building science leads to conservation solutions that embody historical integrity as well as efficiency.
Buildings are increasingly conserved beyond the desire to retain their current state. In today's world of increasing environmental consiousness, extending an existing building's physical life often also means rehabilitating it to today's energy standars as well as spacial needs.
Preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, and adaptive re-use are increasingly important and desired realms that we function within.

Limehouse
Knox Presbyterian Church
Location: Toronto
Building Area: 57,000 sq.ft.
Budget: $9,500,000.00
Project Completion: 2020
Knox Presbyterian Church is located on the western boundary of the University of Torontos main campus in Downtown Toronto. The site comprises three distinct building elements which includes the original church building (1905 1908), the Fellowship Hall (1961) and the late 19th century semidetached residence that acts as a gateway to the historic Harbord Village Community.
Our firm conducted a Building Review of the entire site in 1993 and outlined a twenty year plan for the repair and renewal of the entire site. By late 2010, the church had undertaken a significant portion of this program at a cost of $4,000,000.00. Conservation strategies were pursued to arrest damage and renew stone masonry, stained glass, slate roofs, copper flashings, etc, while at the same time undertaking site and building upgrades.
In the spring of 2011, an update to the original building review recommended a ten year programme to address the remaining areas of work within the building at a cost of $5,500,000.00.

The Workplace is a crucial environment given that a person who works full time will typically spend around 2000 hours a year at work. We desire to engage our clients and end users in a participatory process of visioning and design, in order to form a responsive and responsible building. Our designs combine adapting existing buildings to new uses or completely new facilities.

An object can be a vivid and instantanious expression of idea(s). Our interests in adaptive re-use, materials, craft, and creative resorcefulness are explored and developed in this realm of design and making. These explorations inform our approach to architecture and vice versa.
